julia martina wagenseil
photographer and artist
i`m julia, photographer and artist, but most of all i`m a believer in beauty within all things.
i was born in munich, germany, 1964. at the age of six we moved to ethiopia, where my love for the archaic and wild derives from. we left the country 1976 during the revolution.
i studied literature in switzerland, joined a pantomime group in ireland, got married in rome and returned to switzerland shortly before my son luca was born in 2000.
although photography was always one of my languages, my professional approach started with joining the photography classes at the art school sfg in basel and the photocentrum in berlin for many years.
2010 emile h. malet, the director of passages in paris offered me the opportunity to publish a reportage about jerusalem in his magazine. since then i work as a freelance photographer for passages and since many years i exhibit my work in different galleries and art rooms as an artist.
besides reportage and artistic projects, portrait has always been my true passion and accompanies me throughout my whole life. since 2020 i share a fotostudio with two other photographers in basel and most of the portraits on my website were taken in this studio.
i have never given up on beauty or fairytales or happy endings and i believe that sometimes we must stand alone to behold and seize it.
“a soul that sees beauty may sometimes walk alone. for the world has given up on beauty. it doesn`t believe in fairytales anymore or happy endings. but if my words mean anything to you, hold out for that beauty. walk alone until you seize it. the pain of walking alone against the stream is worth it…”
